Book review: Normal People by Sally Rooney

Normal People is a moving and personal examination of the complex connection between two young people from a small Irish village named Connell and Marianne. The novel explores issues of love, power relations, mental health, and the challenge of genuinely connecting with others, spanning their high school and college years

Rooney’s writing captures the subtleties of human emotions and relationships in a real and nuanced way. Because of their profound flaws and relatability, the characters’ hardships seem genuine. There are both joyful and painful moments in this exquisitely written tale about how individuals shape and are shaped by one another.

Though I like the plot and backstory, this book wasn’t for me. At times, the plot felt slow and drawn out, and I had trouble following the characters’ points of view because there wasn’t a clear narrative voice. Even though I completed it, I was unable to relate to the excitement surrounding it. I regret that it didn’t meet my standards

Overall, I give this book 3.5 stars
