When I first read The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, I had no idea I would get hooked on the series and end up finishing it so quickly. The world-building is excellent, and the character development is strong. I also really enjoyed the plot progression.
From a political standpoint, it's not too heavy, making it a great choice for beginners. The story also features a touch of romance and an engaging enemies-to-lovers dynamic.
Holly Black's YA fantasy trilogy, Folk of the Air, centres on Jude Duarte, a mortal girl who grows up in the perilous realm of Faerie. The series is full of enemies-to-lovers romance, royal intrigue, deceit, and Jude's transformation from a helpless human to a powerful queen.
After their parents are killed by a Fae general named Madoc, Jude and her twin sister Taryn are brought to Elfhame. Jude longs to be powerful and accepted in the fairy world, but Prince Cardan, the High King's evil youngest son, spoils her existence. Jude is involved in a perilous power struggle as court politics develop and eventually orchestrates events to put Cardan on the throne while surreptitiously influencing him.
Overall, I give this book 4.5 stars
